Environment policy statement

The Stewart Milne Group is fully committed to protection and enhancement of the environment. Achieving high levels of environmental performance is a central goal of the Group and it is recognised that environmental matters rank equally with health and safety, finance, human resource, marketing and commercial matters. It is recognised that our activities may have an impact upon the environment whether this is in the immediate vicinity of our activities or indirectly through the use of energy, haulage of materials, use of suppliers and other indirect impacts on the more general environment.

A formal environmental management system is in place across the Group, aligned to ISO 14001:2004, and maintaining this will provide a solid platform to ensure that our environmental objectives are met across our house building, construction, manufacturing and commercial operations. These processes and systems also cover the activities delivered by others working on behalf of the Group.

The Group and all its employees will comply with relevant environmental legislation, particularly the Environmental Protection Act 1990 and the Control of Pollution Act 1974, and will adopt industry ‘best practice’ and relevant requirements where reasonably practicable. Additionally, the Group will seek to meet and where feasible, exceed the expectations and requirements of our clients and stakeholders with regard to environmental performance.

Environmental objectives will be set, via this policy commitment and the consequent arrangement and organisations in place. The policy will be communicated to all employees and others working on behalf of the Group. Employees are encouraged to actively participate in achieving these environmental objectives and to take ownership of environmental matters within their own work place.

Additionally the Stewart Milne Group will, so far as is reasonably practicable:

  • consult with our employees and encourage participation in environmental matters;
  • comply with environmental legislation and relevant codes of practice;
  • systematically identify our environmental aspects and impacts and reduce the level of environmental harm caused by these;
  • provide and maintain plant and equipment that will minimise environmental risk;
  • prevent polluting emissions and discharges to all environmental media - air, land, water and local environment / community;
  • pro-actively protect flora and fauna and local habitats;
  • ensure all employees are competent to do their tasks, and to give them adequate training to minimise environmental impact;
  • maintain external registration to ISO 14001 for currently registered divisions;
  • pursue external registration where appropriate for currently unregistered divisions
  • pursue a policy of continual improvement in relation to environmental performance;
  • make this policy and supporting management system available to interested parties and display on sites, offices and workplaces;
  • make this policy and our register of environmental aspects and impacts available publicly on our website;
  • monitor the performance of our systems through regular audit and management review and
  • review and revise this policy as necessary at regular intervals.

Chain of Custody

Stewart Milne have achieved chain of custody certification which allows us to know where all our timber is from.

Certification verifies that products from certified forests are not mixed with products from uncertified forests. This means the customer can be sure the timber products they buy are from well-managed forests.
