Occupational Health & Safety policy statement

The Stewart Milne Group is fully committed to achieving high standards of occupational health, safety and welfare for all its employees, contractors and members of the public who may be affected by the Group’s undertaking. In addition the Stewart Milne Group also commits to high standards of environmental protection. This policy statement and supporting management system has the approval of the Chairman and Chief Executive and the Board of Directors, who will ensure that appropriate resources are made available to facilitate a culture of continual improvement in health and safety performance.

All significant workplace hazards will be identified and evaluated to ensure that appropriate risk control measures are in place, and that risk is reduced to tolerable levels; information on significant risk will be communicated to all those who may be affected. Further, the Group will investigate all accidents and near miss incidents so that lessons can be learned and measures can be taken to prevent recurrence. To this end the Group will continue with the adoption of a third party, externally certificated occupational health and safety management system to the specification given in OHSAS 18001.

Whilst overall responsibility for health and safety rests with the Chairman and Chief Executive, it is the duty of all employees to accept responsibility for carrying out this policy and reporting to management any known shortcomings with the health and safety arrangements.

The Group and all its employees will comply with relevant health and safety legislation and will adopt industry ‘best practice’ where reasonably practicable. Additionally, the Group will seek to meet and, where feasible, exceed the expectations and requirements of our clients and stakeholders with regard to health and safety.

Health and safety objectives will be set and all employees are encouraged to actively participate in achieving these, and to take ownership of health and safety matters within their own work environments in line with the Group’s Core Health & Safety Values.

Additionally the Stewart Milne Group will, so far as is reasonably practicable:

  • consult with our employees and encourage participation on matters affecting their health and safety;
  • provide and maintain safe plant and equipment to minimise health and safety risk;
  • ensure safe handling and use of substances;
  • provide information, instruction and supervision for employees;
  • ensure all employees are competent to do their tasks, and to give them adequate training to minimise health and safety risk;
  • seek to prevent accidents and cases of work-related ill health;
  • pursue a policy of continual improvement in relation to health and safety performance;
  • maintain safe and healthy working conditions;
  • make this policy and supporting management system available to interested parties;
  • monitor and performance of our health and safety systems through regular audits and management review; and
  • review and revise this policy as necessary at regular intervals.
